Tang Yuan Competition

Note: Boring unphotshopped photos with lack of photography skills ahead. You might find the pictures boring.

Now hor, I finally understand why people wanna blog about their daily stuffs and events. Because if they don't, they have nothing to blog about. Just like what is happening to me. Nothing. To. Blog. About. It's not everyday we get inspired of what to blog about.

And because of this, I will blog about this Tang Yuan Competition that I went with my grandma earlier this morning. And I just realised that the Malay name for tang yuan is "Kuih Yi" (if I'm not mistaken). Why it's named in such a way that it's completely different from the Chinese name, I have no idea.

Oh, shit. I still owe Jennifer a blog layout.

Anyhow, it's was overall a pretty good experience. You know, me being young and need to learn all these traditions and stuffs..

Okay, I have a confession. I have no idea why we need to eat tang yuan every year. Yes, yes, call me a Chinese who knows nothing. Call me, call me. There're actually a lot of Chinese tradition that I have no idea what they actually mean. There're a lot of Chinese fables that I don't know that even kids know. Chinese traditions have deep meaning and stuffs like that, that's all I know. That's why I can't say that I'm a Chinese who knows about all my heritage. I'm pretty much a banana, I've been labelled and banana and it's not exactly the best comments I got from my friends but what can I do right? They wanna say and have fun saying I also cannot do anything.

Flunyway, let's get back to my Tang Yuan Competition. So hor, people there made many types of tang yuan, got a lot of flavours one.

Let the pictures speak (eww.. I always hate saying this. I dunno why..)

This one's my grandma's decorations. Followed her to Malim Jaya. Woke up at 7 just to attend this. My God, I can't believe it. I would actually wake up that early.

Ok, fine. I slept another 5-10 min and then secretly cursing at myself for volunteering there. But then later I realised it was pretty worth. Got to see many types of different tang yuan here and there.

Paise, the pictures' sizes are different. Blogger is trying to do wonders. Flunyway, the first woman on the left is my grandma's friend. She drove us there and swore she'll never join competitions like this anymore cos' it gives her nervous breakdown.

Her coconut decorations. The tang yuan coconut flavour one, damn nice. Then the bigger tang yuans (with an "s" at the end to indicate that it's plural, created by myself) have coconut floss inside (I think that's what it's called), damn nice to eat. Bite only can taste coconut.

This is satay style tang yuan. Got the first prize. Pretty nice actually but cos' I don't have professional skills of photography (plus I'm too lazy to photoshop), so it' doesn't look that nice in photos.

I like this one.Very nice and authentic arrangement. Vintage.

This tembikai arrangement also nice. See, the fella carve the tembikai so detail. But sad, didn't get the top 3 prizes. ;(

Close up shot on the tembikai.

You can see that it actually gives out smoke below the tembikai. So pretty. And the tang yuan is also tembikai flavour one.

1 Malaysia konnyaku tang yuan.

This one's done by a Malay group. At first I was like, "Oh, wow! A Malay also know how to do." But then later I was told that there must be Malays in the competition and I was like, "...". But how true it is, I don't know. It's just what I heard. Flunyway, still, they know how to do tang yuan.

This one damn cute. But I dunno to laugh or to cry. Hello Kitty tang yuan. The Hello Kitty stuffs must have cost bombs.

And inside, it's like this. Hello Kitty shape. Again, I dunno to laugh cos' it's cute or to cry cos' the classic tang yuan got polluted.

Busy people trying to arrange their stuffs.
This one got 2nd prize. Got orange Christmas tree. Bloody Blogger, trying to do wonders with the pictures' sizes again.

This is how the tang yuans look like, up-close.

 Another up-close.

These are the stuffs that can be used to celup the satay, so it's sate celup style.

I'm bloody tired of uploading all these photos so no more. So that's how a tang yuan competition is like. Pretty, decorative then you can go around eating them.

It was overall a pretty nice event, especially for a half-blooded banana (I call myself half-blooded cos' I still know how to speak Chinese and grow up in a Chinese speaking family) like me, can get more experience. Okay, I don't know what experience I got but who knows right? One day when I become old aunty already, I can join competitions like this.

That's all, tudos!

lmao. somehow i was laughing while reading ur post. and the hello kitty tang yuan isn't really a good idea. i mean tang yuans are traditional delicacies and for me they should be prepared the traditional way. it's like a pageant performing hiphop dance step in a Miss Chinese International Competition.
